Residential pest control, or pest management, is more than just the riddance of a nuisance in your home, it is vital for you and your family's health and safety. Whether your infestation is with insects, rodents or other wildlife, many of these unwanted creatures share similar risks when present in your home.
Food Safety
The Province of Ontario requires that all food premises be inspected by Public Health Inspectors a minimum of 1, 2 or 3 times per year depending on the type of establishment. While your kitchen may appear clean and sanitary, there are no officials inspecting your home to make sure that it is "up to code" for food preparation. When it comes to large and small pests that leave hair, feces and bodily tissues or fluids behind, the contamination goes far deeper than what you can see with your naked eye. Fecal contamination of food or water is usually invisible, and it can cause nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and an array of illnesses and infectious diseases such as salmonella, typhoid, and dysentery. Mouse droppings, for example, contain E. coli and salmonellosis, the bacteria that causes food poisoning. Having these pests anywhere near food preparation surfaces can cause potentially fatal infections, so immediate eradication and aseptic sterilization of necessary surfaces is vitally important.
Disease Carriers or Vectors
On top of the vast array of disease that can be caused by bacteria transported by the pest, some animals can also be carriers of diseases. Many of these can infect human hosts via airborne pathogens. Often the animal itself is immune to the symptoms of the disease, meaning that it shows no signs of illness, but is still highly contagious. Insects, especially mosquitoes, are often carriers of various strains of the flu, and other viruses. Along with covering exposed skin when out in the evening, cases of significant mosquito or other insect infestation should be dealt with directly using pesticides. Keep in mind that there are many pesticides and repellents now on the market that are chemical free and not harmful to pets or children. For many light pest management cases there are effective organic solutions as well.
Structural Damage
While your health and safety has to come first, the importance of preventing property damage cannot be ignored either. Some insects, such as termites and similar species, consume wood materials and burrow holes in homes. This kind of structural damage, if the root cause is not abruptly addressed, can escalate into significant, even irreparable damage. Repairs involving the complete replacement of materials or structural portions of your homes can be very costly, tens of times more expensive than initial pest control. The best economic decision is to deal with the root cause as soon as it is apparent with effective pest management. Addressing the problem quickly and effectively with professional help will minimize the damage to your home as quickly as possible. Mice and other rodents chew holes through drywall and insulation. Of even greater risk is their tendency to gnaw on electrical wires, which has been known to cause electrical fires.
The list of pests and the risks that they can pose to your family, your pets and your home go on and on. If you suspect that you may have a pest problem, contact a professional who can do a full inspection of your home and property. Pest control professionals are trained to recognize risks, and recommend the best way to minimize them, before the problem develops into a serious hazard.
